NBR and XLPE are both closed-cell insulation technologies, but they are not identical materials.

The correct selection depends on the service conditions, installation method, facing requirements and project specification.

Scudoflex offers both systems as part of its insulation range.

NBR insulation

Scudoflex NBR is a flexible elastomeric foam system.

Its published characteristics include:

  • Thermal conductivity from 0.032 W/m·K at 10°C
  • Vapour diffusion resistance μ >17,000
  • Tube, roll and sheet formats
  • Aluminium-foil and glass-fabric facing options
  • HVAC and chilled-water applications
  • Refrigeration applications
  • Mechanical-services applications

XLPE insulation

Scudoflex XLPE is a cross-linked polyolefin foam.

Its published characteristics include:

  • Thermal conductivity of 0.035 W/mK at 23°C
  • Operating range −80°C to +105°C
  • Diffusion resistance μ >54,700
  • Factory-bonded aluminium foil
  • Tube, roll and sheet formats
  • HVAC, refrigeration, chilled-water and hot-water applications

Which should a consultant specify?

There should not be a one-size-fits-all answer.

Instead, the consultant should define:

  1. Operating temperature
  2. Required insulation thickness
  3. Condensation-control target
  4. Vapour-control requirement
  5. Fire-performance requirement
  6. Facing
  7. Mechanical protection
  8. Indoor/outdoor exposure
  9. Installation method
  10. Applicable project standards

For Lahore, Islamabad and Karachi

Local climate should form part of the engineering consideration.

For humid environments, vapour control and joint detailing become especially important.

For outdoor applications, weather and UV protection must also be considered. Scudoflex specifies additional external protection for outdoor NBR and XLPE installations.

The practical conclusion

Rather than asking simply "NBR or XLPE?", project teams should ask:

Which closed-cell insulation system provides the required thermal, moisture, fire, mechanical and installation performance for this particular service?

That approach produces a more defensible technical specification.
